Pelvic Wellness – What Is It?

Tensegrity Physical Therapy | November 27, 2019 | Filed under:

Here at Tensegrity, we offer treatment to help with pelvic wellness. To treat the pelvic region, we have trained members of our staff that can work directly with the muscles of the pelvic floor, in addition to the surrounding area, including genitalia. As with the treatment of all other body regions, each individual is given customized treatment and plan of care to help resolve symptoms or dysfunctions. Often times, this treatment includes an internal exam via the vagina or rectum, as this is the most direct way to assess the muscle quality and function of the pelvic floor.

If an internal vaginal or rectal exam/treatment is warranted, we explain to our patients that this type of treatment is much like the soft tissue release and trigger point release that they have likely received at other regions of the body. In some cases, the muscle(s) and the surrounding tissue may need to be desensitized to help create a different neurological output. Most of the time, treatment includes breathing and relaxation education and when needed, strengthening.

Some common complaints that could warrant a pelvic floor exam can include, but are not limited to; hip and back pain, groin and pelvic pain, pre/during/post pregnancy, cyst/hysterectomy/prostate removal, prostate inflammation, painful intercourse, fecal or urinary incontinence, constipation or abdominal or genitalia surgery.

People of all ages and genders can benefit from some form of pelvic wellness physical therapy. Pelvic wellness appointments cost the same as any other physical therapy appointment and can be billed through insurance.
